China Facts: WeChat will link to digital ID card and facial recognition


Authorities in Guangzhou, capital of the southern province of Guangdong, announced the pilot programme for the city's Nansha district this week. Nansha will allow residents to link their national messaging and social-media app WeChat suing facial recognition. It will probably be rolled out nationwide next month, according to the official Xinhua news agency. Tencent's profit model is overly reliant on internet gaming, thus the group's part in the ID programme will give it a different purpose and potentially new revenue streams*)
